 Teaching Philosophy

I have been invested in theatre and the arts for as long as I can remember. It has been a crucial part of who I am and has brought a lot of peace to my life. I want to show my students that there are good and bad elements globally, but we can work through the bad parts on stage or with other art types. I see theatre as therapy, and that’s what I want to bring to my students. Theatre gave me a safe place to be me. I had a pretty rough life growing up, and being on stage helped bring light at the end of the tunnel. I want to offer a space of acceptance and insight. I want to be an advocate for my students when they feel they don’t have anyone.

I want to work with students and help them achieve their goals. As their teacher, I can guide and help motivate, but every person is different and what they want is different. Even with students in it for an easy A, there are always things to be apart of on stage. I want to fit the needs of every student that comes into my classroom. If that is acting, stagecraft, or directing, they will have a place to call home. I will work with them, guide them, and teach them. As theatre teachers, we can’t just spit the information at them as hope for the best at opening night; relationships need to be formed.

The shows I want to do are hopefully going to make waves. I want to start a conversation on why challenging topics matter. The more we de-stigmatize topics like mental health and sex, the more students will understand the world at large. I want to create a well-rounded, culturally compassionate student. I love the idea of working with students who have learning disabilities and mental handicaps. I feel like they need a way to express emotions just like the other students but are typically not seen on stage. I want to show off the abilities of all my students. I want to focus on the aspects that make them unique and use the welcoming stage I have set to showcase them.

I will teach every aspect of theatre to all the students that come on to my stage. No matter Race, Religion, Neurodiversity, Sexual Identity, or anything that would make someone “different.” There is magic on stage that lets people be whoever they want to be, so that’s what’s I want to show them…magic.
